Pre Season Conditioning and Tryout Preparation ...
Coming Fall of 2012!

Middle School Boys and Girls

School basketball has gotten more competitive over the years.  Some school try out as many as 40-50 middle school players.

A player must have good pivoting and jump stop skills, they must be able to keep the ball up in many different circumstances, be able to use both hands with dexterity when shooting, dribbling and passing, they should understanding basic defensive positioning, have good shooting mechanics, be able to run unabated for munites at a time and also understand how to rebound and help out on defense.  Beyond these physical skills, they should have some understanding of mental tenacity, discipline and handling adversity.

Some players already know they will make the team.  Others may be on the "bubble".  Others may wonder how much playing time they will get.

The question then becomes how sharp can your skills be?  Can your conditioning be at its peak?  Can you reduce/eliminate any weaknesses or holes in your game?  Whether your spot is guaranteed or you don't know if you'll make the team, you should attend.

"The keys to winning basketball are conditioning understanding the team concept and mastering the fundamentals of the game".  -- John Wooden

Conditioning - A player's chances of making any basketball team improve as his/her conditioning improves.  THese sessions are ideal in this regard.  The players are running, moving and playing the entire time.  We conduct many of the same drills that occur in tryouts and the players will have multiple repetitions each day.  We also mirror what many school coaches require; sprints at the end of each practice.

Team Concept - Most players receive little or no training as it pertains to what a team is, how it operates, what roles are and how to best achieve success by understanding their role.  This approach applies more to high school players than to middle school players, although we willdiscuss the team concepts with all participants.  Everyone will get a strong dose of what a team is, traits coaches look for in their players (intangibles) and how to best use their individual skills to fill specific roles and make the team.

Mastering the Fundamentals - This is what basketball basics is all about.  Players may be in great shape, may understand the team concept but if a player can not shoot, dribble, pass and play effective defense, his/her chances are less than good to make the team.  Players who attend the pre-season sessions will improve and sharpen their competitive basketball skills.
